Over the last weekend the National Indoor Championships were held in three venues including Fielding. The tournament was very well run and held in a fantastic venue, so what could be wrong with that. Numbers, that is numbers of archers. Mana archery club has one of the largest membership lists in the country, but only five headed to feilding to compete in the nationals. Why so few??? I spoke to a club member a few weeks ago and asked how many members would be going to the nationals, the responce was about 5, when I asked why so few, the response was only 11 or so, were affiliated to archery NZ, same question as before, Why so few??? Mana has the opportunity to be one of the stongest clubs in the country. With an impressive membership list, excellent coaching and very good grounds and facilities, why are so few affiliating to Archery NZ? Remember this, what you get out of a sport (well anything really) is in direct proportion to what you put in. Some would say what does archery NZ do for the archers, a good question, but if archers do not affiliate the answer will always be not much. I encourage all members of Mana Archery club to get behind Archery New Zealand and grow archery in NZ. The Judge

Preaching to the converted, I have been pushing that message, and asking the same questions, for the last four years. There was a period where membership to Archery NZ was discouraged, not explictly, but subtly. There has been SOME progress in that this no longer occurs, however we as a club do not actively promote membership to Archery New Zealand. I think the current policy being adopted is that a new member gets given a form (I'm not 100% certain this happens) but nothing is said for or against and the new member makes up their own mind. I can't recall exactly, but I think there was some issue discussed a while ago about the difficulty processing affiliation fees unless they came in at the start of the year. I'm not sure how big an issue this really is for new members or if it solely relates to current members who can't be bothered paying fee's on time. My personal opinion is that Archery NZ membership should be paid by a new member as soon as they join the club, no option given. While I recognise and acknowledge that affiliation to Archery NZ is not compulsory, nobody would bat an eyelid anyway. When I joined a judo club recently I was given absolutely no choice but to pay an affiliation to the national sporting body. And the same is true for every other sport I have been involved in. I expected nothing less and went in fully expecting this requirement. Its an argument that just goes round and round in circles though. If you have an issue though, please feel free raise it formally with the committee so that they can again discuss it. These are my personal comments, and do not reflect the opinion of the Mana Committee.
