Hi folks,
Since it can be a hit-or-miss affair when booking accommodation, I thought it might be handy to have a list of recommended places to stay when we're shooting at an out-of-town venue. I know everyone has different criteria (of which value for money is probably foremost) - and that there are already sites out there which serve this purpose, but I would prefer to take the word of people I actually know than some stranger or tourist. Anyway, to start the ball rolling I have a couple of places to recommend: Arena Lodge, Palmerston North (for groups - primo lodgings, but very reasonable with the cost spread across 3-5 guests; some apartments even have 2 bathrooms - one of which includes a spa bath)
Riverview Motel, Wanganui (ideal for 1-2 people - standard rooms are unremarkable but clean; spa units are a little bit extra, but worth it)
That's the extent of my experience, I'm afraid... Well-traveled archers, please feel free to add to the list. ;D

Got 2 more places to add to the list:
Novotel Rotorua Lakeside - good sized rooms in a nice location, with pretty much everything you need (plus extras like sauna, spa, indoor heated pool and proper gym equipment). Service was a bit slack, though, and if you do stay there, make sure you request a room that's not next to the laundry! There's an in-house bar, cafe/restaurant. The latter is overpriced but there are several excellent restaurants within easy walking distance.
Ventura Inn, Hamilton - newish place, reasonable rates, adequate lodgings and facilities, with a continental buffet brekkie included in the price. They have a small pool (outdoor, unheated) and a couple of basic exercise machines, and the place is located in the CBD, within walking distance of eateries and supermarkets. If there are more than 2 people I would recommend a suite over a studio (you will get a much better sleep).
