Well, I'm currently in lovely Auckckland attending the Archery New Zealand Olympic Solidarity High Performance Coaches course. The three other selected coaches (at this stage) are Colin Tucker from the South Island, David Croskery from Gisborne and Shane Switzer from Auckland (Shane is also the Manager). James Park (a top Australian and world renowned coach) is running the course for us. As per his seminar last year, a hell of a lot of benefit, all though this year is geared to making us more effective coaches rather than archers. It is very good, and although we may not always agree with what each other says (the nature of coaching I'm afraid) it has been very worth while and exceptional value for the High Performance coaches, with a lot of information shared, debates had and discussions held.
I will say that the High Performance programme is looking a lot more likely to succeed for one reason (and a pretty compelling one) we are now required to have this in place to send archers to events such as the olympics and commonwealth games (NZOC requirement) and secondly we are getting significant buy in from the archers and most of the coaches which is most important. All bodes well for the future. Certainly the discussions, policies and practices all indicate a very worthwhile program that will assist not only our current high performance archers making the upcoming commonwealth games teams, but also will assist our future/potential high performance archers to advance their shooting and force their way into National teams. ;D

Well that was a very busy, enjoyable and tiring weekend. It was excellent to catch up with Jim since his last seminar he presented to us and really good to get to know better the other coaches who will be involved with the High Performance programme. To date we have received a number of applications from archers throughout the country wishing to apply for the programme so that is good. Things that we covered on this training weekend included the following: - Equipment tuning
- Aiming
- Correct release
- Biomechanics
- Clearance
- Mental Approaches
- Technique Analysis
